“The Feeling Factor”

A good friend asked me questions about what to do when your feelings are overwhelming. While reading the words, I could literally feel every emotion that was being described. My first thought was about how much courage it takes to share your emotions with another person. The world has taught us to hold things in and to NOT be vulnerable. But where did that idea come from? As I began to respond, I was immediately drawn to my own personal soul cries and reminded that just hours before, I laid awake longing to share my thoughts and my heart. I stood face to face with feelings I didn’t have words to express, feelings I don’t even believe would be understood by common intelligence because of where they are rooted… in my design.

In Genesis 1:26, after God created all these things, He then created US. God actually desired someone to commune with and to have covenant relationship with. The verse says, “God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature…” (MSG). Well, what IS God’s nature? 1 John 4:8 tells us that God IS love. 1 Corinthians 13 gives us a clear definition of what love is and what love is not. Our loving God can be found throughout the Word either being moved out of compassion or acting in anger. Isaiah 63 and Ephesians 4 warn us not to grieve the Holy Spirit. John 11 shows us a weeping Jesus, in Mark 14 we find a distressed Jesus, an angry Jesus is revealed in Matthew 21, and the most loving Jesus on the cross in John 19. So, if we were made in the image and likeness of God, then only the enemy could lead us to believe otherwise! Now, we aren’t to be led by our emotions. But it is in the enemy’s deception that we are robbed and kept from walking in our true love identity, free to express ourselves in love with one another, without judgment or ridicule.

I believe the key to us all living in a healthy emotional state is us all living and thriving in healthy, loving relationships with God and with one another. Love is not a feeling. But love evokes many feelings. God gave us love as His greatest gift, not just because that is what He’s made of, but because love has the POWER to HEAL as He does. He tells us in 1 Corinthians that love NEVER fails, not just because He never fails, but because if we are constantly pursuing love as a way of life, WE can expect to prosper in every area of our lives. The next time someone asks you “How you feel”, use it as an opportunity to build the relationship. Be honest. Don’t be ashamed of your emotions… you were designed to feel. And if more of us would take the time to embrace what our soul is experiencing, we will find ourselves more capable of loving unconditionally and high above the world’s flawed and superficial ideas of what character traits are most valuable. In short, when our hearts are secure in love, our emotions are in line with the Word. But when we are experiencing emotional distress, ONLY LOVE has the ability to set things right. And when things are right, we ALL feel better.

Go and make it right.
