Some of you out there may be wondering, why is relationship SO important. Of all the topics to choose from………. prosperity, education, marriage & family, career development, the state of our community and government— WHY relationship???
Well, because THAT is the beginning. Our relationship with God and His people define who we are and what we choose to do with the life we’re given. Our connections and the value we place on them, they all shape how we see the world and respond to it.
So, exactly WHAT is important to you? How do you spend the bulk of your time? What really fulfills you? Is it success? A fancy title? Money? Having the biggest house on your street? What good is ANY of that when you don’t have anybody to share it with? People spend their entire lives chasing after wealth and riches only to find themselves lonely and empty.
Go back to the beginning and look at what GOD invested himself in. In Genesis I, God created all these “things”… the Heavens, the earth, the creatures, time, seasons. THEN, He made us. We were the only thing created in His breath and in His image. And THAT was the start of human relationship. When sin entered the story, that relationship was severed. But God never stopped loving us. He desired for us to be His family SO badly that He had to sow the very thing He wanted to reap: RELATIONSHIP! He gave up His only son, His most valuable sacrifice, in order to get us back- His children, His family, His heirs to the Kingdom.
So, how does all of that affect us today? In Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV), one of the Pharisees asks Jesus, 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” We can sum up those 5 verses with “Love God and love His people”. Therein lies the “blueprint” for abundant living: Relationship with God, and relationship with others.
How you view relationship determines how you see the world. That perspective shapes your character, your behavior and your lifestyle. And those factors dictate how you treat people, your motives, and your habits. Simply put, when we have a solid relationship with the Father, we tend to have healthy and fulfilling relationships with others. We become accountable to someone other than ourselves. We create safe environments where we form bonds and be transparent. We connect at the soul level where we can truly partner and build community. We learn to love like God loves- sacrificial, selfless, merciful love that sees the heart of man beyond his flaws.
At the core of relationship is the recipe true prosperity in all areas of life, knowledge that transforms, marriages that inspire, families that support, careers that enrich, communities that uplift, and a government that aides the people. No one builds up an empire with the intention of being alone. God said in Genesis 2:18 (AMP) “It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory) that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.” That’s not just talking about making Adam a wife… because we’re all called to be helpmeets one to another. That Word talking about RELATIONSHIP— the thing that gives life to our very existence!
So, WHY is relationship so important? It is our God-created companion for this life. He KNEW that we needed someone else to share our journey with. And whether you find one spouse, a great brother, or three amazing friends- it is YOUR responsibility to do everything in your power to preserve, protect and maintain relationship.
